CHAPTER 4
Chapter 4 reveals that Buck is not completely an "all work and no play" kind of guy. After being assured by Longshore that he'll get his business loan, Buck leaves Longshore's front porch and begins his celebration by walking down to Aven's local "Jim Crow" saloon. The saloon has a safe where Buck can safely deposit $500 he carried to show Longshore as well as the white corn liquor Buck now craves as he attempts to get his desire for Longshore's gorgeous blonde daughter out of his mind.
Probably due to local ordinance, the Aven saloon segregates its customers by race by installing a thin partition across the middle of the bar and serving its Black customers through a curved slot cut into the flimsy wall which allowed the banjo music from their end of the bar to entertain the saloon's entire crowd.
