This 1908 COROLLA drawing of the Elk's Home on the southeast corner of 6th Street (Cotton Street) and 22nd Avenue (Madison Street) is signed "B.W. Leach." I believe this means that the drawing was done by Bessie Warren Leach who in 1908 was Dr. Abercrombie's secretary. The Elk's Home was later renovated into the Alta Apartments and when you observed the outside of the Alta, you could see where the steps of the Elks Home led all the way up to the 2nd floor of the building and you could also see where the portico and columns had been removed from the front of the building. The covered entrance on the 22nd Avenue side of the drawing with the horse and buggy was converted into the entrance to Weatherford Office Supply and the elevator entrance for Alta Apartments. Bessie Warren Leach's sister married Mims Torrey Jemison and they built one of the first houses on Audubon Place which still stands west of the entrance on University Boulevard. Mr. Jemison was a first cousin of Robert Jemison, Jr.
