Dauphin Island West Base. — This station is on the western end of Dauphin Island. In 1847 the station was within one-half mile of the extremity of the island, while in 1897 the island extended 3^ miles west of it. I11 September, 1897, the distance was reduced by a storm which washed away 1 mile of the western end of the island.
