As you enjoy the food, drink and entertainment on Penalver Street today, you may want to contemplate the fading landscape of the old schoolhouse on the D.I. horizon or you may want to visit what remains of the Bayou Heron Park's dock.  If you would like further evidence that D.I. is DEFINITELY AMERICA'S MOST HISTORIC GULF ISLAND [D.I. is the ONLY GEOGRAPHIC PLACE-NAME mentioned in the original  1712 contract describing the boundaries of old Louisiana],Consider this: As you stand on the edge of Bayou Heron, look out toward the northern side of the D.I. bridge and remember the fact that GRANT'S PASS was the FIRST and ONLY construction made upon the GULF INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY DURING THE ENTIRE NINETEENTH CENTURY.
A link about the formative years of THE GULF INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY which had its construction commenced just north of Dauphin Island. https://books.google.com/books?id=KQo0IpPC-K0C&pg=PA8&lpg=PA8&dq=%22grants+pass%22+alabama+%22john+grant%22&source=bl&ots=WYW5vD0JC8&sig=xNkxttMUURJB9_J5KgaThZG4fIk&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjZyeC6rZjLAhVC6CYKHR8zBv8Q6AEIIzAD#v=onepage&q=%22grants%20pass%22%20alabama%20%22john%20grant%22&f=false
