Dallas & Lowndes certainly have a legacy of poverty & bigotry, however, what you failed to recognize was that Selma has always stood as an island of tolerance in sea of intolerance.
I had a Selma native my same age tell me that her Daddy, arguably the most influential person in Selma in '65, sat Jonathan Daniel down
IN HIS OFFICE
& told him he'd be shot dead if he went to Lowndes County. I have been told by three different people that the rector of St. Paul's sat his ass down & told him THE SAME THING!

ran against Mel Bailey for Sheriff of Jefferson County, he told everyone that Seymour Trammel ordered the attack at the foot of the bridge.
What Did The Citizens of Selma Have To Do With That?
