200 years ago next weekend, the U.S. Army under the command of General Andrew Jackson, with the support of the U.S. Navy at the mouth of Pensacola Bay, began a bombardment of Bateria San Antonio of present-day Fort Barrancas on the Pensacola Naval Air Station. On May 28, 1818 the Spanish Governor of West Florida surrendered to General Jackson and prepared to be transported to Havana. Here's a humorous poem that gives the Southerner's view of the criticism OLD HICKORY received in D.C. for his initiative.
