In 1827 Congress made provisions for the owners of French, English and Spanish land titles on Dauphin Island to present evidence of their titles to a land commission which examined the submitted documentation and made recommendation on the claims to Congress. Three groups of heirs submitted documentation that they were the legal owners of Dauphin Island. The latest entry on the D.I. history blog details the arguments of all three claimants to the island. http://dauphinislandhistory.blogspot.com
